Cancer and Meditation
Shared Interest Group

Vision

A community where living with cancer becomes an opportunity to recognize innate well-being and a sense of wholeness that is not defined or diminished by illness.

Mission

We support people affected by cancer—patients, survivors, and caregivers—by offering a safe and inclusive space to become familiar with innate awareness, love and compassion, and wisdom, helping them meet the challenges of illness with greater stability, clarity, and peace.

Values

1. Innate Well-Being
We hold that awareness, love and compassion, and wisdom are inherent human capacities that remain available, even in the midst of illness and uncertainty.

2. Inclusivity and Respect
We welcome people of all backgrounds, beliefs, and stages of the cancer experience, honoring individual perspectives and lived experience.

3. Experiential Practice
We emphasize direct experience through simple, accessible meditation practices rather than conceptual understanding or belief.

4. Non-Fixing Approach
We do not aim to eliminate or correct difficult experiences; instead, we support learning how to relate to them with openness and kindness.

5. Complementarity
Our community complements medical and psychosocial care and does not replace professional treatment or support.

6. Confidentiality and Trust
We honor the privacy of every participant, creating a safe and trustworthy space for open and honest reflection.

In addition to these core principles, we are guided by the foundational values of the global Tergar Meditation Community.

7. Generosity
A spirit of sharing is at the heart of all we do.

8. Ethical Conduct
We consciously commit to avoid harmful actions and engage in virtuous deeds.

9. Meditation
By training our minds, we cultivate focus, balance, and equanimity.

10. Wisdom
We recognize how much we can learn from one another and from the communities we serve.

11. Joyful Effort
We take our work seriously while carrying ourselves lightly.

12. Patience
We give ourselves and others the time and space needed to navigate challenges.

Community Practices

The Cancer and Meditation Special Interest Group is a practice-based community for people whose lives are touched by cancer.

Through simple meditation practices and guided reflection, participants become familiar with innate awareness, love and compassion, and wisdom—inner qualities that remain available even during difficulty. The practices support meeting challenges with openness and kindness and integrating these qualities into daily life, including treatment, recovery, and caregiving. The community strengthens inner resources that support balance, resilience, and well-being.

The date we started: November, 11, 2025 at 9:00 am ET.

Regular meetings: Every second Tuesday of each month at 9:00 am ET.
