AI Shared Interest Group

AI has seemingly taken the world by storm. Reminiscent of an earlier time when anything dot-com turned heads, today anything with the letters A and I is the source of buzz. AI promises to improve productivity, uncover a cure for cancer and Alzheimer's, bring life to other planets, and extend human health span. More and more employers are adopting AI in the workplace.

But AI has its dark side. Like social media, AI has the ability to hijack our attention, taking us down rabbit holes. It can hijack our need for social connection, as it has sometimes with deadly consequences. The energy demands of AI exact an environmental cost and exacerbate social divides. AI is marching towards a world where it creates better versions of itself at an increasing pace. Something called artificial superintelligence could be like a country of 50 million geniuses. In that scenario, would humans be relegated to serving as pets or pastimes for AI?

  • What does all this mean for us as meditation students?

  • Is AI neutral? helpful? harmful? both? neither?

  • What does it mean for us who are committed to benefiting all beings and reducing suffering?

In this group, we’ll explore Mingyur Rinpoche’s teachings as they apply to AI. The purpose isn’t to find all of the answers, determine right or wrong, but to welcome diverse thoughts and experiences with openness and kindness. Subject to group input and interest we'll focus on the question:

  • How can we consider, approach, and use AI with awareness, love and compassion, and wisdom?
