Wisdom and Compassionate Action
Balancing the Feminine and Masculine on the Path of Awakening
With Tergar Instructors Edwin and Myoshin Kelley
Saint Augustine, Florida, USA
Have you ever noticed how caught in the web-of-doing the world has become? How we are so often looking for solutions or so fixed on our goal that we forget what richness the present moment holds? Or are there times when you are fearful of the openness that allows your idea of yourself to fall away? These are times when we can notice that the feminine and masculine aspects of our experience are out of balance. More commonly there can be an overdeveloped sense of the masculine qualities while the feminine remains unseen and unappreciated. It is said that awakening can occur only when the masculine and feminine are in balance.
While the teachings of the Buddha lead us to transcend gender identities at the ultimate level, understanding the attributes of feminine and masculine help us to embrace all aspects of our being.
Mingyur Rinpoche teaches that wisdom and skillful means are like two wings of a bird. Wisdom, the spacious and ungraspable qualities of the nature of mind, is conceptualized as the feminine. The masculine is expressed in the principle of skillful means, the compassionate actions that engage us with the world. When these qualities are in balance, we can transcend the world of duality and move toward awakening.
During this weekend workshop, we will explore these qualities and through recognizing and appreciating them, we can find balance. We will learn to recognize belief systems that can inhibit these qualities and explore Tibetan Buddhist teachings that nurture the authentic expression of these attributes.
This workshop is open to people of any gender and is designed to help each of us discover and understand more fully the balance of the feminine and masculine aspects of our own experience. The context of this exploration will be through meditation practice and waking up to our inherent goodness. We will use dialogue, writing, drawing, archetypes, meditation, storytelling, and celebrating the lives of enlightened beings, all as a means of finding balance.
Come ready for some exploration!
