We all have tender places of one form or another, borne of suffering or loss. We can recoil so strongly from these spots, it may feel as if we will never reach them. Through the practice of meditation, however, we begin to understand that awareness, compassion, and wisdom are qualities of our true nature, present to us at any time, and there is nothing that is outside of their reach. Every obstacle can be brought onto the path and examined with awareness, compassion, and wisdom.
In this weekend retreat with Tergar Instructor Myoshin Kelley, assisted by Facilitator Justin Kelley, we will explore how meditation can help us find strength and presence in tender places. This retreat is suitable for all meditators, and includes breakout sessions for Path of Liberation students.
In Mingyur Rinpoche’s tradition, spending time in solo or group retreat is highly valued as an important way to deepen our understanding and experience of practice. Whether you have never done a retreat before or are a seasoned practitioner, this program provides an excellent opportunity to taste the benefits of sustained practice.
About the Instructor and Facilitator:
Myoshin Kelley attended her first meditation retreat in 1975 at the age of 20. Through the ensuing years she has received dharma instructions from several renowned Buddhist meditation masters in the Theravada, Zen, and Vajrayana traditions. In 1994 she accompanied her husband, Edwin, to the Insight Meditation Society (IMS) in Barre, MA, where she was trained as a meditation instructor by Joseph Goldstein and Sharon Salzburg. Myoshin was introduced to Vajrayana teachings in 1993 and met Mingyur Rinpoche in 1998. Since then she has practiced with Mingyur Rinpoche in North America and Asia benefiting from his skillful, lucid instructions on the profound teachings of Mahamudra. She moved to Minneapolis in 2010 to help support Mingyur Rinpoche in his worldwide vision and leads programs internationally and locally.
Justin Kelley spent ten years living in India and Nepal, studying the Tibetan language, Hindu and Buddhist philosophical systems, and various meditative approaches. He first became a student of Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche in 2007 and has practiced under his guidance ever since. In 2015 he became a PhD student at Rice University in the Department of Religion, where he studies with Dr. Anne C. Klein. His research focuses on the psychophysical transformation that occurs within religious practice, and the ways in which these practices influence our understandings of identity and the world we live in.
