Compassion and wisdom are the basis for the path of awakening. The practice of compassion culminates in the commitment to benefit beings in any way we can. Wisdom manifests as the recognition of pure awareness, an experience that puts us in touch with the very source of unchanging and profound peace. In Tibetan Buddhism, wisdom and compassion are likened to the two wings of a bird, each equally necessary to take flight. Both are developed through the practice of meditation.
In the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, the key point of meditation is to become familiar with awareness, which is the very essence of mind. Discovering this awareness allows us to experience the mind’s natural qualities of ease, warmth, and clarity at any time and in any situation. Khenpo Kunga will show us how to access and expand the natural kindness and compassion that we discover in meditation as the abiding quality of awareness.
Khenpo Kunga’s teachings, always filled with laughter and practical advice, will include explanations of these profound teachings, guided meditations, and periods of discussion. This program is suitable for anyone interested in Buddhism, including both beginners and advanced students.
Khenpo Kunga became a monk at a young age and began his education at Tergar monastery, where he studied the rituals, prayers, and other traditional practices of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. At fifteen, he participated in a traditional three-year meditation retreat. Following this period of intense meditation practice, he entered the renowned Dzongsar monastic college near Dharamsala in Northwest India. Khenpo studied there for eleven years and received his Khenpo degree (equivalent to a PhD). Read more…
Adam Kane began practicing Buddhism in the Burmese and Thai Forest traditions in 2000 and was introduced to Tibetan Buddhism in 2004. He then moved to Nepal in 2008 and completed a master’s degree in Buddhist Studies at Rangjung Yeshe Institute. He has since then worked as a translator and interpreter for various Tibetan lamas and khenpos.
