The late Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche (1920-1996) was a Tibetan master of the Kagyü and Nyingma lineages. After fleeing Tibet during the Chinese invasion, he spent most of his life at Nagi Gompa hermitage on the outskirts of Kathmandu Valley in Nepal. Tulku Urgyen was regarded as one of the most highly realized meditators of the last century. In addition to establishing many monasteries and guiding a community of meditators from around the world, he also taught many of the 20th century's most highly regarded Tibetan lamas, including His Holiness the 16th Karmapa. He was famed for his profound realization and for the pithy, humorous and experiential style that he used to teach. He was especially known for his ability to bring students to a profound understanding of the nature of mind through the power of his presence and his simple, direct instructions. Rinpoche's sons include four well-known spiritual teachers: Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche, Tsikey Chokling Rinpoche, Drubwang Tsoknyi Rinpoche and Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche. |
