Meditation helps us to discover a deep sense of well being that is not dependent on the circumstances of our lives. When we learn to tame our minds and open our hearts through the practice of meditation, we discover the compassionate wisdom and radiant joy that is our true nature.
This residential retreat will offer a unique opportunity to deepen our experience of the Joy of Living meditation teachings of Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche. Over seven days, we’ll explore two important forms of meditation - awareness meditation and meditation on loving-kindness and compassion - experiencing firsthand how these practices can transform the mind and open the heart. The retreat will take place in a secluded environment and with the support of a community of meditators. There will be sessions of meditation throughout each day, along with video teachings by Mingyur Rinpoche, group discussions, and presentations on the key points of meditation by Tergar instructor Tim Olmsted.
The retreat will be held in Smith Hall, a special event facility located on the campus of Lewis & Clark College, beautifully situated on 137 acres of lush forest in the hills surrounding Portland, Oregon. Meals will be prepared from locally grown food.
The retreat will also include a commuter option for individuals living in the Portland area who are not able to participate in the full residential retreat. The schedule, for both commuter and residential participants, starts Friday, July 15 at 7pm and ends at 9pm. Thereafter, the retreat hours for the commuter participants will be 9am to 5pm daily, (which includes a hot lunch), and will end at noon on Thursday, July 21.

Tim Olmsted has practiced meditation for over thirty years and has studied with some of the greatest Tibetan masters of the past century. He served for three years as the director of Gampo Abbey, the largest residential Buddhist monastery in North America and is currently president of the Pema Chödrön Foundation. In 2003, Tim founded the Yongey Foundation to support and promote Mingyur Rinpoche's activities in the West. Tim lives with his wife Glenna in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, where he leads an active community that follows Mingyur Rinpoche's teachings and those of Mingyur Rinpoche's family lineage.
