The Joy of Living – Level I: Calming the Mind

A Meditation Retreat for Students

In this series of video presentations, Tibetan meditation master and best-selling author Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche teaches how meditation can help create a peaceful mind and joyful heart. With his characteristic clarity and wit, he shows how any experience, even anxiety and other powerful emotions, can be transformed into a source of joy. This weekend is suitable for people of all faiths, as well as both beginning and experienced meditators.

The schedule will include video teachings by Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche, along with guided meditations, discussion, and short presentations on the key points of meditation practice by Tergar instructor and UMN alum Cortland Dahl and Tergar instructor Myoshin Kelley.

Teacher & Instructor Bios

Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche is a rising star among the new generation of Tibetan Buddhist masters.  With a rare ability to present the ancient wisdom of Tibet in a fresh, engaging manner, Rinpoche’s profound teachings and playful sense of humor have endeared him to students around the world. His first book, The Joy of Living: Unlocking the Secret and Science of Happiness, debuted on the New York Times bestseller list and has been translated into over twenty languages.  Rinpoche currently teaches throughout the world, with centers on four continents. Cortland Dahl has been meditating for nearly two decades and has taught courses on meditation and Buddhist philosophy around the world. In 2000, he received a master's degree in Buddhist Studies from Naropa University. As an author and translator, he has published six books on the practice of meditation.

Myoshin Kelley attended her first meditation retreat in 1975 at the age of 20. Over the years, she has studied under meditation masters from various traditions and been trained as a meditation instructor by Joseph Goldstein and Sharon Salzburg at the Insight Meditation Society (IMS) in Barre, Massachusetts. In addition to leading retreats throughout North America, in 2003 Myoshin was appointed as teacher-in-residence at the Forest Refuge, the long-term practice center at IMS. Read more…
